“Once in a While”
Album – Homeward
by Maggie Vogts
Some mornings shine a bit warmer,
Smoothing the cares in my face.
Some days a quiet home brings ease,
Reminds me that I’ll be okay.
Sometimes I smile in the stillness,
Go back to my old dreaming ways.
Some days I almost forget the sting –
When you chose to push me away.
But once in a while I remember
The image so real, I can’t breathe.
The way that you’d smile ‘cross a crowded room,
The way your eyes lit up toward me.
And once in a while I still hear them,
The promises you swore you would keep.
Once in a while, I forget that I loved you.
Darling, do you ever think of me?
The walks that I loved, now they’re lonely,
‘cause you’re not there, striding by me.
My hand’s feeling empty, my heart’s frigid cold,
‘cause everything we knew is gone.
‘Cause once in a while I remember
The slow way you stopped loving me.
The coolness, the distance, they settled in,
Cruelty I’d never seen.
Somehow the days get so lonely,
Knowing your heart’s far away.
But each step I take to move on seems vain,
‘cause you fill my mind most days.
And once in a while I still wonder
Why I was so easy to leave.
I only conclude that it must have been you…
